What’s your favorite word?

Yes, it’s me—the Dictionary. Keeper of thousands of words, guardian of definitions, the quiet backbone of every conversation you’ve ever had. People assume I love all my words equally, but let’s be honest: even I have favorites.

You might think I’d pick something grand like “philosophy” or dazzling like “serendipity.” But no. My favorite word is “listen.”

Why? Because it’s the word that makes all the others matter. Without listening, words are just noise, letters flung into the air with no home to land in. Listen is quiet, humble, almost invisible—and yet it’s the foundation of connection.

I admire how short it is, how unassuming, yet how powerful. People use me to speak, argue, and shout their truths, but too often, they forget the pause, the space, the ear on the other side. Listen reminds them.

So yes, I hold thousands of words. I sparkle with complexity, I brim with beauty, but deep down, the one I respect most is the one that asks you to stop, to open, to receive.

That’s my favorite word. And if you paid attention, you’d know why.

—Signed,

The Dictionary
